Friends and Allies of Americans United
by Jim Day
You can tell a lot about someone by their friends and the company they
keep -- organizations are no different.
At the 1994 Americans United for Separation of Church and State
National Conference, a manual entitled _How to Win: A Practical Guide for
Defeating the Radical Right in Your Community_ was made available to
conference participants. This 252-page instructional guide was
jam-packed with political strategies on how liberal activists can defeat
conservatives at the local community level in areas concerning abortion,
gay/lesbian issues, and public education.
Serving on the committees that "made the manual a reality" were
representatives from Americans United, the Baptist Joint Committee on
Public Affairs, Planned Parenthood, People for the American Way, B'nai
B'rith, the National Jewish Democratic Council and the Sexuality
Information and Education Council of the U.S. (SIECUS).
Three directories -- serving as resource guides for gay and lesbian
activism -- were contained in the back of the manual. The directories
were entitled: _PFLAG: Parents, Families & Friends of Lesbians & Gays
Celebrating Real Family Values_ (with subhead "PFLAG Allies in the Field"
a "State by State Summary"); _Contacting Politically Active Gays and
Lesbians_ (with subhead "Gay and Lesbian Political Clubs" -- also a
state-by-state list); and _Openly Gay and Lesbian Officials._
This "How to Win" manual, made up of 44 short articles and 7
directories, was published in 1994. Articles and directories were
provided by the various "Contributing Organizations" which are listed
